St Nicholas church stands on the banks of the River Thames near the former ferry, which was the only means of crossing the river for many years. A place of worship has existed on the banks of the Thames since the seventh century and Chiswick grew up around the church. The dedication is to St Nicholas, patron saint of sailors and fishermen and endorses the early parishioner’s livelihood when the river was a busy highway for travel and trade.
