Clifton started to develop as a residential area during the Georgian period. Grand houses requiring many servants are built in the area. There are many famous terraces such as the majestic Royal York Crescent, visible from the Avon Gorge below.
Cliftonwood is residential and largely of Victorian terraces, which are often painted bright colours some of which can be seen from the harbourside.
