BRISTOL
The city of Bristol straddles the River Avon with a prosperous maritime history and industrial heritage. Its former city-centre port is now a cultural hub - the Harbourside. The harbour's 19th-century warehouses now contain restaurants, shops, art galleries and cultural institutions.

Bristol - Cliftonwood and Hotwells
Cliftonwood is a hilly district to the north of Bristol Harbourside, famous for its iconic multi coloured Victorian town houses. Bristol has a colourful maritime character and also the colourful houses are likely to be due to the unique cocktail of Bristol traits. Its topography, which makes them visible from around the city; its long terraces in which colour is a way of distinguishing your house from your neighbours, its artistic and creative vibe; and its liberal attitude of individualism and rule-breaking.
It is said that sailors returning from sea, painted their houses distinctive colours so they could chart home in the fog. This is true of other ports around the world but how true the story is of Bristol is anyone’s guess.
Hotwells is predominantly the level ground adjoining the north side of the Harbourside, with some stunning Georgian townhouses and Georgian squares.

Bristol - Harbourside
Bristol Harbourside covers an area of 70 acres in the centre of the city. It has existed since the 13th century but was developed into its current form in the early 19th century by installing lock gates on a tidal stretch of the River Avon to provide a tidal by-pass for the river.
It is called a floating harbour as the water level remains constant and is not affected by the state of the tide on the river.
